A Unique Handmade Kitchen Knife

Ulu single stem patterns are cut as one piece from recovered lumber mill high carbon saw blade steel. Quality carbon steel.

The heat treatment process includes a differential harden with clay in our forge and quenched in oil. With a torch we temper the single stem and tang tough then differential temper for strong edge retention in our oven. We leave the heat treatment colours and patina on the blade untouched for rust protection.

The patinas are a form of protective oxidation. Effectively sealing the steel against rust. We leave the patinas patterns and temper colours untouched on the blades created from the differential clay hardening and the differential temper. The patinas tell a story of how the knife has been made and where it’s from.

The blade is hand forged with a high bevel going up into a thick tough stem. Hardened and differentially tempered for toughness and a strong edge.
The handle scales are held with threaded stainless steel or brass pins.

The sheath is hand made from 8 oz. leather. Double saddle stitch.

A fillet is sewn between the layers of leather protecting the hand stitching from the razor edge of the ulu.
Rivets are placed along the edge and rounded corners for reinforcement and anti wear.
We've added a braided lanyard to the sheath to tie to your pack. We can tool in a motif on the sheath. Examples are in the gallery. The motifs and/or initials are included.
