We've been recoverering high carbon saw blade steel from lumber mills in central  British Columbia since 1998. Big saw blades, 2, 4 and 6 feet in diameter, 1/4 and 5/16 inch thick. Recover and process is not easy but it is worth every drop of blood, sweat and tear.
Another choice of steel stock we forge is spring steel. We recover 5160 spring steel from older auto wrecks. For larger, heavier adze heads, spring steel is an excellent high carbon steel for adze blades cutting through tough knots and leaving finish behind.

We hand forge these quality steels and build our tools tough and have been making custom adze for carvers since 1993.

We hand craft and design our hand tools to fit with one another. These are are a few suggestions for Cariboo Blades wood carving sets put together by customers. A recurring theme is the adze and hook knife.

Handforged, hardened and then differentially tempering the blades, blending the tempers from a tough blade to the strong edge. We make premium adze efficiently balanced for carvers using them full time. Not to heavy, not to light. Weight is important but to much weight is tiring. This style of adze was developed on the Pacific Northwest coast by the Haida Nation of Haida Gwaii, British Columbia, years ago. A highbred of the elbow adze.

When you request us to make an adze, the angle of blade to handle, handle length and the shape of the adze edge are specifics you may consider. We wrap a bit of leather on handles so that you can "choke up" the handle rather than ordering an adze with a short handle, if you want. You can move up a longer handle making it short. A short handle is short and limited to one hand.

Your bowl carving tool kit might not be complete without a hook or crooked knife.
