Mt Caribou Knife
Handmade wilderness knife for extreme use.
What makes the Mt. Caribou knife.
7” (178mm) spear point blade is hand forged from a piece of lumber mill saw blade carbon steel. A molybdenum, chromium, nickel wear resistant steel. The spine is a thick 5/16”, (8mm). Shaped sharp and square for fire steels and tough for batoning and prying.
The finger guard is a piece of feller buncher chainsaw bar welded to the tang and brazed with copper. An 8mm thick head saw tooth is welded to the end of the tang and backed with a thick piece of leather. The steel pommel is designed for hammering, prying, digging, smashing and breaking. Not light duty. Heavy duty abuse.
The full tang is tapered and hollow ground putting the knife balance at the finger guard. Moose antler scales are squeezed in between the hammer butt and finger guard, held with threaded stainless steel pins and peened over. The lanyard hole has a copper insert peened in and is strung with a short hand braided lanyard.
The heat treatment is thorough. The knife is differentially hardened with clay, then, differntially tempered with a torch while the edge is protected. The blade finally is put in an oven where the edge is tempered giving the knife strength and toughness where needed. The guards and butts are welded to the the tangs using oxy/acetylene.
The Mt Caribou has been designed as a tool for splitting firewood, limbing and heavy chopping, batoning, digging, hammering, smashing, prying and, of course, cutting.
Locking Lanyards
A second lanyard grows from the back of the sheath and loops over the butt of the knife securing it in its sheath. The firesteel is secured in its loop with a leather tie and an antler bead cinch. The steel has a yew wood handle. A pouch sewn into the sheath holds a diamond touch up stone. A leg tie tab. Saddle stitched by hand.
