Skews and Slicks, Custom Hand Tools
Hand forged then hardened and differentially tempered from high carbon 3/16 - 5/16" thick head saw steel. An excellent steel for large woodworking hand tools. We recover this high quality carbon steel from lumber mills. It takes more time and effort to retrieve this steel but it is well worth it.
We can also process and and forge 5160, a spring steel we recover from wrecked trucks. Again, tough high carbon, quality steel that will hold an excellent edge through the toughest knot.
We make hand forged custom slicks and skews for log home building, timber framing, sculpting, woodcarving, and boat building, shipwrights. If you want a certain kind of slick, with a certain weight and a particular edge we will make it with a lifetime guarantee.
The Skews and paring slicks are 56cm (22 inches) long overall, and have a 15 degree cutting edges. Skews are bevelled on both sides. The blade is 13 cm (5 1/2") long. Of course we can make the blades and handles longer or shorter custom to what you need.

Skew edges are bevelled on both sides at acute angles of 15 degrees which will allow you to get very close to your work. The quality sawmill steel we handforge, harden and differentially temper will take a great edge.

Timber Framing Slicks
The custom Timber Framing slicks shown here have 3 inch edges, 1/4, 3/8, 1/2" thick steel we recover from 5 foot diameter head saw blades, chipper blades and spring steel. Tang and socket fit. The blade tang is offset (doglegged) giving you more clearance from your work. Of course we can build them with no offset. 30 inches long overall with apple, oak or cherry wood handle.

Blade length and width can be requested. Starting with a 10 inch blade going into the socket, 30 inches overall.

The tang is set 5 cm (2") past the socket into the handle. The blade is handforged hardened and differentially tempered, these are strong framing slicks. We can wrap a bit of leather on the handle for grip if you want.

Handmade Custom Log Home Building Slicks and Wood Carving Slicks
We make a variety of flared end slicks (flaren slicks), cup slicks and fishtail slicks. All are hand forged from recovered spring and lumber mill saw blade steel repurposed into custom handmade woodworking hand tools.
This Carving slick is a smaller version of the fish-tail slick. 51cm (28 inches) overall. The blade is hand forged from .5cm (3/16") high carbon steel containing molybdenum, chromium and nickel - a tough steel. It will hold its 7.5cm (3 inch) razor edge. The tang of the blade is set 13cm (5 inches) into a thick hardwood handle then set with a copper ferrule. Everything is hand done and carved in to fit. A perfect fit. The handle is offset from the blade giving you better control and more room.
Log home builders use our scarf slick for shaping hand-hewn timbers and as a finishing tool cleaning up logs and corners. For woodcarving it is an excellent tool for shaping and finishing wood sculpture like totem poles and canoes.
