Custom Made Bushcraft Knives
The strength of a Mountain Man knife and the versatility of the Nessmuk knife.
Cariboo Blades designed this original custom bushcraft knife in 2007 with a customer, Wiseman. The blade was hand forged from tough high carbon lumber mill head saw blade steel. The spine and 2/3rds of the blade are made tough, protected with clay and glass while hardening in oil. Clay and glass are subtly manipulated creating boreal wetland images. The blade and tang are then cleaned, preserving the patina, and differentially tempered the length of spine, blending tempers keeping the hardness of the edge while keeping the rest of the steel tough. We preserve and leave all the heat treatment and temper colours on the spine and blade. A knife blade that performs and keeps the razor edge you put on. We have been working with these high carbon steels for over 20 years.
The head saw blade on the right was cut and made as an installation for the 2001 art show, “Artropolis”, in Vancouver. It was hung from the CBC studio ceiling over a 700 year old 2 metre diameter fir stump that had been left in a clear cut. We dug and burned it from the ground, loaded the saw blade and stump on a trailer and brought it to Vancouver.
