Traditional adze styled after the elbow adze. A Pacific Northwest styled design with similar angles found in traditional carving adze around the world. Bowls, masks, totem poles, dug-out canoes, building furniture, fine art sculpture, hewing logs and timbers. We make adze for bushcraft tool kits.
Different styles, different shapes for making art.
We put inner and outer beveled edges on the adze unless requested not to. You can customize the edge geometry depending on the carving tasks. Weight, blade width and shapes, length of handle, blade angle to handle are all your choice if you want.
The steel is cut and forged from 6 foot and 5 foot diameter head sawblades. The high carbon steel saw blades we collected 20 years ago from local lumber mills are hard to find now. Hardening and then blending tempers is a differential temper. We differentialy temper keeping the edge hard and strong and the length tempered tough. The blades are strong and tough.
We can forge spring steel adze blades. We recover 5160 spring steel from older auto wrecks. For larger, heavier adze heads, spring steel is an excellent high carbon steel. Adze blades cutting through tough knots and leaving finish behind.
This adze has a 1 1/2 inch edge spooned blade for cutting organic shapes, bowls, spoons, insides of masks, any shape that is dished or has an inside curve. The edge is beveled on the inside with a convex bevel on the outside. This keeps your adze from sticking in your work, makes it more efficient and cuts inside rounds easier and when it comes to honing that razor edge it is easier to do this on the outside. The hook knife has a full parabolic curve with double beveled straight edge. Please take a look at our crooked, hook and bent knives page.
This lighter adze blade is hand forged into a spoon like shape from high carbon lumber mill trim 20” circular saw blade, excellent high carbon steel. After forging, the blade is approximately 3/16 “ to 1/4” thick. It has an apple wood handle and measures 15 inches from the head, 17 overall.
